Several years ago, I was having dinner with a NFL head coach and I asked him, “Who do you think will win the Super Bowl this year?” We were sitting in his kitchen having a very late dinner. He didn’t even look up from his plate to answer, but I will never forget what he said.
Coach: “Same team that won last year, and the year before that, and the year before that.”
MK: “What do you mean? Three different teams have won the Super Bowl in the last three years.”
Coach: “That’s where you’re wrong. That’s where most people get it wrong too.”
MK: “What do you mean?”
Coach: “The same team wins the Super Bowl every year.”
MK: “What are you talking about? You sound like you’ve been drinking.”
Coach: “I haven’t been drinking, I mean every word I have said, and I am completely serious. The same team wins the Super Bowl every year: The team that has the discipline to master the basics. Football has a handful of basics. There are a thousand different plays, but they all rest on the offense and defense carrying out the basics of football with unerring consistency.
Success at almost anything rests upon this single principle: Do the basics, do them well, and do them every day, especially when you don’t feel like doing them. What’s the most important area of your life? Are you mastering the basics?
