We live in a hyper-critical society and so it is easy to become critical of the people around us and even the people we love. But, before you criticize your spouse in front of your children, consider this…
When you are critical of your spouse, your child takes it personally. Makes sense when you think about it because your child is half that person (in a sense). You came together with your spouse to participate in the process of procreation, and the result was your child. As children and adults, we see ourselves in our parents, to greater and lesser extents. We then transfer other people’s criticisms of our parents on to ourselves, especially someone as close and familiar as our other parent.
So, before you criticize your spouse in front of your children, ask yourself: Do I want my child to this about themselves?
